Author Guidelines

Types of Submissions 
We will consider the following types of historical studies for publication: 

  • Historical research articles: Original exploration on a higher education issue from a historical perspective 
  • Archival studies: Historical analysis of a higher education historical event/occurrence/development/figure that is rooted in primary evidence 
  • Review essays: Critical evaluations of previously published historical analyses, essays, or books 
  • Work-in-Progress articles: Reports on archival research undertaken or recent findings not yet completed but presented for further discussion 
  • Conference reports: Reflective accounts of attended conferences/events on the history of higher education 
  • Historical projects/initiatives: Reports on initiatives/projects related to the history of higher education 

General guidelines for authors: 
Papers should be submitted in Word format, following APA Style Writing Guidelines. Manuscripts should include a title page as a separate file with the author’s name, academic affiliation, mailing address, email, and telephone number. All text should be double-spaced. 

Manuscripts should aim a 5,000-7,000 word limit, including notes. Manuscripts should include an abstract of 150 to 200 words. Illustrations, tables, photos, and figures are welcome; in fact, we encourage you to include them. Please submit a list of possible captions, credit lines, and placement in the text with images and legends with figures. Authors should be prepared to secure permission for images and other copyrighted material from the copyright owner, unless the material is in the public domain. 

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word or RTF document file format.
  • The submission includes a title page as a separate file with the author’s name, academic affiliation, mailing address, email, and telephone number.
  • The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; follows APA Writing Style 7th edition guidelines; and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The submission includes an abstract of 150 to 200 words.
  • The submission is within the 5,000-7,000 word range, including notes.
